1. Brewskis

Brewskis understands pub food. Their menu is small but the customers rave about the quality. ‘Best wings best fries, best burgers’ are among the many comments from contented patrons, and we agree with them. The servers also make the ambience great, as do the patrons, always the sign of a happy pub. Come for the drinks and the friendly banter, stay and enjoy their specialties.

2. Frontier Dining

Frontier Dining is an old school Chinese-Canadian diner. The buffet is good value with lots of seafood and the take out is large in quantity and of good quality. The Asian food is well cooked, with nuanced skills with the spices. This is a surprise in Gregoire and we predict once you try it, you’ll try it again.

3. Mary Brown’s

Mary Brown’s is a chain famous for its fried chicken Try the pulled chicken sandwich for something different, or delight in the familiarity of fried chicken with crisp skin and golden goodness inside . Pub style wings are also available as are chicken wraps, chicken burgers, popcorn chicken, chicken and tater fries, chicken fingers, and even tater poutine, to which you can add chicken. Mary Brown sticks to what they’re good at and that’s good enough for us.

4. McRays Roadhouse Grill and Bar

McRay’s Roadhouse Grill and Bar does breakfast you can’t wait to wake up for and as well as the standard fare, they have some interesting dishes that you wouldn’t expect. The Ukraine Scrambler is excellent as it’s the Jambalaya. It’s cheap too, not something said too often in this town.  The staff are friendly and talented and the chicken avocado sandwich is a favourite we will go back for.

7. OJ’s Steak & Pizza

OJ’s Steak and Pizza is another traditional Canadian diner where the owner puts his heart and soul into the food. Although known for their pizza, which they do well, they have more skills in the kitchen, with a shawarma selection that would be the envy of a much larger city, steaks, pastas, chicken, subs and sandwiches and really good donairs. If it’s not on the menu and they have it in the kitchen, the chances are they’ll make it for you. OJs is simple but good.

8. Prime Social Kitchen

A victim of the 2016 fire, when smoke damage meant everything was lost and then gutted, we are delighted this social phoenix has risen from the ashes and is once again offering a highly innovative menu that includes the Prime Social Bar-BQ and daily specials on drinks. This is one of the few places in town to order Eggs Benedict. The Hollandaise is velvet-like and creamy, almost as delicate as the tomato cream sauce on the tortellini, or the curry sauce, or as luscious as the Po’Boy sandwich. Meanwhile the coconut prawns bring back crunchy memories, as do the Szechuan edamame, or the cheese bombs. Welcome back Prime Social Kitchen!

9. Sweet Basil

Sweet Basil is the place to Thai one on. The soups are meals on their own, the noodle bowls are delicately spiced and herbed, and the hot food is properly spicy, Pride of place, however, goes to the ginger beef, there is a chicken option as well, which is nuanced and feathery light yet packs a distinguished punch. Bring your appetite, portions are more than ample.

Fast Food

A. Burger King

Burger King is comfort food, you know what you’re getting and the kids play area is an attraction in its own right. For now, this is the only standalone branch in Fort McMurray. The hearty mozzarella bacon cheeseburger is a rib filler and the BK quad stacker is even bigger. Onion rings are different from other chains and the croissant sandwich for breakfast is sinfully good as is the enormous omelette sandwich.

B. McDonald’s

McDonald’s is all about comfort food. You know what you’re getting, and everyone has their favourite. Parents like the convenience, children love the flavour, adults are nostalgic for a cheeseburger or a shake, and everyone loves the value. In addition to the burgers, fries, happy meals, chicken and breakfasts, their coffee is the best of all the food chains in Fort McMurray. There is nothing outwardly Canadian about the local stores on the normal menu. However, watch out for the occasional specials; poutine, maple syrup flavoured treats, salads, and even the McLobster.
