Looking to do something exciting, for the whole family and on a budget? Enjoy a staycation on your February Family Day Weekend and head out to the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games, from the 16th – 19th.
Over 2,800 athletes, coaches, and officials will be in the Region. The athletes qualify through eight zones across the province. The last Alberta Winter Games, hosted in Medicine Hat, saw over 40 athletes from Fort McMurray and Anzac. This event recognizes athletes across this province and their amazing commitment to sport.
With 22 sporting events happening over three days, the 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games offers something for everyone. If you want to watch athletes hit the slopes, compete in the ring or battle on the ice, this multi-sport event will surely fulfill your competitive thirst.
Positioned across 11 venues in the Region, the Games are excited to host sporting events in Fort McMurray, Anzac, and Fort McKay. Each venue will offer a unique experience to athletes, coaches, and officials visiting our community.
Cultural programming will be a creative component to the Games. From a Torch Relay and Opening Ceremonies on February 16th to busker style entertainment surrounding the sporting events, the Games culture aspect will keep you entertained and highlight the talent of our region.
To make this multi-sport event possible in 3 days, it takes a lot of hands on deck. The 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games anticipates needing to fill close to 3,000 volunteer shifts. From medical and security to food centre and athlete villages, these hard working troops will be diverse and worth their weight in volunteer kit swag!
Leading up to and during the Games local promotional events and activities will get everyone ready for games time. Enjoy the 150 Days Out event held in September and get your games gear at the merchandising launch in December. Grab your souvenirs at merchandising pop-up shops and watch out for prizing all year long! Don’t forget to snap a selfie with the Games’ mascot and tag with #ItsGamesTime on all social media outlets.
Taking on the challenge of hosting an Alberta Winter Games comes with the knowledge that support will be needed in many different areas. One of the major support areas required for these Games is sponsorship. Some of our current sponsors include Games Champion Sponsor– Tridon Communications, Diamond Sponsor – The Stream-Flo Group of Companies, Diamond Sponsor – Harvard Broadcasting, Platinum Sponsor – Keyano College & Huskies Athletics, and many more to come!
