Fort McMurray Golf & Country Club (FMGC) is Fort McMurray’s largest golf facility, nestled in the Athabasca River valley adjacent to the Wood Buffalo neighbourhood. This beautiful 27-hole complex is complete with a driving range, putting green, and simulator. Power carts and pull carts are available for rent.

FMGC features three distinct Par 36 9-hole layouts: Big River, Black Bear, and Fox Tail, which opened in 2017. From the rear Black tees, Big River plays 3,444 yards, Black Bear 3,522 yards, and Fox Tail 3,382 yards.

Players have the option of playing 18 or 9 holes, and the three 9-hole layouts are rotated regularly to create varied challenges for golfers. Each 9 has a very different character and features its own signature holes, taking players through the Boreal forest, alongside the Athabasca River, and over undulating terrain. FMGC is certain to challenge even the most seasoned players.

FMGC also has a great reputation for hosting tournaments & events for players of all skill levels. For locals, they host a round of the annual Memorial Open alongside Miskanaw Golf Club, Men’s & Women’s Open tournaments throughout the year, Bonnie & Clyde couples events, corporate tournaments, and many more. From 2011-2015, FMGC hosted the Syncrude Boreal Open presented by AECON, a stop on the PGA Tour Canada which brought professional players from the US and Canada to the course.

The Dining

While the golf experience at FMGC is certainly memorable, the dining experience is arguably even more so. For years, the FMGC Clubhouse boasted one of the very best patios in Northern Alberta, where locals and visitors alike would flock for the expansive view of the Athabasca River valley, specially-crafted cocktails, and creative, fresh, dining options. FMGC will be opening their brand-new clubhouse in the fall of 2018, once again featuring a large patio area with beautiful views of the forest and the river.

The Golf

Since the opening of MacDonald Island Park in 1978, the Miskanaw Golf Club has been a cornerstone of this sporting complex. After much growth and development over the past 40 years, Miskanaw has become one of the top public courses in Northern Alberta and a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. Featuring an 18-hole course, driving range, putting green, and a simulator, Miskanaw offers a contemporary layout that underwent a remodel completed in 2014. Miskanaw’s topography and Boreal forest-lined fairways occupy the northern, eastern, and southern portions of MacDonald Island, offering players views of the Athabasca River and the Clearwater River. This course is tricky and requires attention to detail to score well. Power carts and pull carts are available for rent.

From the longest Black Fox tees, Miskanaw plays a challenging 7,031 yards.

Miskanaw also plays host to numerous tournaments, including one round of the Memorial Open in May, charity events, corporate events, Men’s & Women’s Open tournaments, and more. The central location of the course at MacDonald Island means that it’s become a natural gathering place for golfers in town, creating a very social atmosphere. Miskanaw offers numerous leagues for all ages and skill levels.

The Dining

The clubhouse building at Miskanaw Golf Club is complete with the Fox Den Grill & Patio that overlooks the 18th green. Featuring a large patio to enjoy long summer afternoons (and the poor putting of your pals on the 18th), the Fox Den serves food options that are more upscale than you’d expect with some signature cocktails to go along with them. A few crowd pleasers are the Crispy Pork Belly, Chicken Tikka Naanwich, and try some new options from their Pitmaster Smokehouse Menu!  Open from 7am daily, the Fox Den is a popular choice for food, drinks, or relaxing on a beautiful day.
