Great food and great wine will take center stage September 22 as the SMS Equipment Wine Auction in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters Wood Buffalo returns with Life is a Cabernet in the Shell Place Grand Ballroom.

The 9th annual event is already over 60% sold and expects to welcome  500 guests to a French cabaret inspired ballroom for an evening of chef inspired dishes and incredible selections at the bars.

“The annual event is our largest fundraiser of the year to support the child and youth volunteer based mentoring programs we offer across the region,” said executive director Joanne Angel-Andrusiv. “Last year the proceeds helped us to launch two new programs for local kids called Go Girls and Game On which supported the children on our waitlist.”

Back again, this year by popular demand guests will have the opportunity to taste 5 unique and exceptional wine and spirits in the Manitoulin Transport Tasting Room! This year, the event welcomes Keg n Cork Edmonton who will host an exclusive whisky tasting bar! The Tasting Room creates an exciting opportunity for guests to partake in an exclusive experience, unique to the Wine Auction. The Tasting Room will be accessible to guests who have pre-purchased their 5-taste punch pass on Eventbrite – tickets are limited and selling fast.

The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres, during the enticing silent auction.  The highlight of the evening is the always fun and spirited live auction, where participants have a chance to acquire rare, collectible and extraordinary wines and experiences.  This year the live auction includes the rare opportunity to bid on a bottle of The Beast donated to the organization by the Wood Buffalo Brewing Company.  The whisky is made with 100% peated malt that was left outside for the duration of the fire which led it to absorb the smoke from the wildfire. This bottle available for live auction is one of a very limited number to be made available at cask strength around 63%.  Other items on the live auction block include a city and site heli-tour donated by Phoenix Heli-Flight, a whisky tasting experience for you and 14 of your friends from Keg and Cork with extremely rare whiskeys up to 35 years old and a 2004 Dom Perignon Rose valued at over $375 and more.

Try your luck at the Wine Pull where every bottle is valued at a minimum of $30 with chances to win bottles valued at $75, $100 or more with bottles generously donated by That’s the Spirit.  This amazing night isn’t just for wine connoisseurs, the event has increased the size of its bars where guests can select from multiple levels of wine to try something unique or rare while browsing the incredible silent auction lots.

Friends of Jack will be performing live on the Suncor Stage and the dancing gets started after the live auction with DJ QPid.  Tickets are available online now at fortmcmurraywineauction.ca.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Wood Buffalo (BBBSWB) is a child and youth volunteer based mentoring charity, which has been active in Wood Buffalo since 1979.  The work of BBBSWB is completed through one-on-one and groups mentoring, in school and in the community. BBBSWB  volunteer mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and of having respect for family, peers and community.  The BBBSWB enrollment and thoughtful matching process leads to powerful connections between their “Bigs” and “Littles”. Each time they pair a child with a mentor they start a life-changing relationship. In 2017 BBBSWB helped support over 170 children and youth in the community.
